The 2013 Window Art Project

Downtown Chico, CAThe 2013 Window Art Project includes dozens of local artists partnering with downtown businesses to exhibit their art in storefront windows. This is the 19th October that Chico has participated in National Arts and Humanities Month which is a coast to coast collective celebration of arts and culture in the daily lives of Americans.

The event is also part of Chico's 9th annual Artoberfest festivities. Free Walking Tour Maps and the artist's contact information are available inside businesses displaying Window Art Project plaques.

The Arts Commission started the Window Art Project in 1994 with the goal of promoting local artists and art as economic development by integrating art work, street level, into the vibrant downtown marketplace.  Display spaces and merchandise are activated in unexpected ways and, at its leisure, the public is exposed to the city's artists. What started as a small effort with about 15 participants has grown into a fruitful collaboration that benefits the business, the artist, and the community.

Chico Public Art

Oftentimes, what is left of a civilization is its public art and architecture. Public art helps define a community’s identity and reveal the unique character of a specific neighborhood. It is a unifying force. In other words, art has power. Chico's public art program is young compared to many cities but it is vibrant. Take a walking tour of the beautiful art benches located in downtown or hop on a bike and visit each public art piece in Chico. Here is a listing. Learn more about the Chico's Public Art Program. You can also check out the complete list of public Art pieces here!

#10 Art Town

Art Towns California: A Guide to Galleries, Museums, Festivals, Lodging & DiningWhen the organizers of Artoberfest, a communitywide and monthlong series of exhibitions, concerts, performances, and art fairs, decided ot have fun with the concept of the Palio di Sienna, a centuries-old horse race around the Piazza del Campo in the Italian town of Sienna, they came up with a winning formula.

Instead of having various Terzieri (neighborhoods) represented by four-legged thoroughbreds, the Palio di Chico uses the leg power of humans to carry sculptures of race horses around the Downtown City Plaza…” —John Villani
